Because turmeric only helps if your body can actually use it.
On its own, most of the curcumin in turmeric passes straight through you. Black pepper changes that. Every River of Life capsule pairs turmeric extract with black pepper, so the turmeric you pay for gets absorbed.

The turmeric absorption problem
Curcumin is the compound in turmeric that researchers study most. The catch is that your body absorbs very little of it. It's broken down quickly in the gut and liver, so most of it never reaches your bloodstream.
That's why a spoonful of turmeric in your curry, or a cheap turmeric-only capsule, may do less than you hope.
How black pepper helps
Black pepper contains piperine, which slows the breakdown of curcumin. In a classic human study, adding piperine raised curcumin absorption by 2,000% compared with curcumin alone.

What turmeric is studied for
Joint comfort: a review of randomized trials found turmeric extract eased arthritis symptoms compared with placebo.
A gentler option: in a 367-person trial, turmeric extract worked about as well as ibuprofen for knee pain, with fewer stomach complaints.
Ongoing research: the NIH notes that evidence for many other uses is still developing.
More than turmeric and pepper
River of Life capsules build on turmeric and black pepper with three more ingredients:
Turmeric extract (curcumin)
The core of the formula, studied for joint comfort and a healthy inflammatory response.
Black pepper (BioPerine)
Piperine raised curcumin absorption by 2,000% in human volunteers, so the turmeric you take is actually used.
Organic ginger
A traditional partner to turmeric, gentle on digestion.
Bromelain
A natural pineapple enzyme studied for easing swelling.
Ashwagandha root
An adaptogen studied for stress, calm and better sleep.
How to take it: 2 capsules daily with food. Give it at least 4 to 8 weeks of steady use, the same window most studies measured.
Turmeric and black pepper questions, answered
Can't I just add pepper to turmeric powder?
You can, but it's hard to get a consistent amount. A capsule gives you the same dose every day.
Is it safe to take every day?
It's generally well tolerated. Avoid it if you're pregnant or nursing or have gallbladder problems, and ask your doctor first if you take blood thinners, diabetes medication or stomach-acid medication.
How do I choose a good turmeric supplement?
Look for turmeric extract, black pepper and a clear label. Our guide to turmeric with black pepper supplements explains what to look for.
What if it doesn't work for me?
Unopened products can be returned within 30 days on your first order, so you can try it with confidence.
How much curcumin is in turmeric?
Turmeric root contains only about 3% curcumin by weight. That's why studies use turmeric extracts, which concentrate curcumin, rather than kitchen powder. Even with an extract, absorption is the bottleneck, which is where black pepper comes in.
Why black pepper and not just more turmeric?
Taking more turmeric doesn't fix poor absorption; much of the extra simply passes through. Piperine slows the breakdown of curcumin in your gut and liver, so more of it stays in your body long enough to be used. A small amount of black pepper extract does a lot of the work.
What to look for on a label
Turmeric extract, not just turmeric powder.
Black pepper or piperine listed alongside it.
A clear daily serving you can stick to.
No unnecessary fillers.
What to expect
Take two capsules daily with food, ideally a meal with some fat, which also helps curcumin absorption. Most turmeric studies ran 4 to 12 weeks, so give it at least a month before you judge.
Who should check with a doctor first
Talk to your doctor if you take blood thinners, diabetes medication or stomach-acid medication, have gallbladder problems, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Piperine can affect how your body processes some prescription drugs.
How River of Life compares
Turmeric powder in food: flavorful but very little curcumin absorbed.
Turmeric-only capsules: often skip the black pepper.
Turmeric gummies: often low in extract and high in sugar.
River of Life: turmeric extract with black pepper, plus ginger, bromelain and ashwagandha.
More questions
Will it stain my teeth or upset my stomach?
Capsules avoid staining. Take them with food to keep your stomach comfortable.
Is it vegan?
Yes. River of Life is vegan and contains no fillers.
The research on turmeric and black pepper together
The famous absorption study gave volunteers curcumin with and without piperine and measured how much reached their blood. With piperine, levels were far higher. Since then, many turmeric studies have used formulas designed to improve absorption, because researchers recognize that plain curcumin is poorly absorbed. That's the reasoning behind pairing the two in every River of Life capsule. It doesn't make turmeric a cure-all, but it does mean the turmeric you take has a much better chance of being used by your body.

Where potency meets purity

Anti-inflammatory power
Here's the secret: turmeric alone is good, but turmeric WITH black pepper? Game changer. Black pepper contains piperine, which supercharges turmeric absorption by 2,000%. Yeah, you read that right. Two thousand percent. Without black pepper, most of the turmeric just passes through your body. With it? Your body actually uses it. That's why every bottle combines these two powerhouses — because taking turmeric without black pepper is like buying a Ferrari with no gas.
Ashwagandha Roots
Ashwagandha roots are widely recognized as a powerful adaptogen, offering significant benefits for stress management by helping the body achieve homeostasis and promoting a sense of calm. This makes Ashwagandha an essential supplement for those seeking to enhance mental clarity, reduce cortisol levels, and support overall resilience against the demands of daily life.

Digestive aid
Used for millennia, Organic Ginger is an effective digestive aid that soothes the stomach and supports the gastrointestinal tract by alleviating nausea and indigestion.
Natural inflammation relief
Bromelain is a natural enzyme found in pineapple. It helps your body break down proteins and has been studied for easing swelling and supporting joint comfort, which makes it a natural partner to turmeric.
